What he should have done was to give custody of the Narn ship. That was his duty as an officer and as a human being.
Unless, of course, he actively WISHED to destroy the Centauri cruiser. Given his extreme smugness and self-righteousness in this episode, I wouldn't put it past him.
After all, when the Centauri cruiser accepted to let the Narns pass in a previous episode, and the Centauri were attacked, Sheridan pretty much sat on his hands and didn't do a thing.
