Sesame Street: Celebrates Around the World
get this episode on: DVD click here / VHS click here
Directed by: Jon Stone, Randall Balsmeyer With the help of beloved Elmo (Elmo), Sesame Street Celebrates Around The World not only entertains toddlers with festive songs and sights, it also teaches children about diverse holiday traditions from across the globe. As a news anchorperson, Elmo converses with his cousins around the world, Elmo lookalikes dressed adorably in international costumes, and discovers how children commemorate the holidays. In Japan, for example, children are shown flying kites and partaking in the festive "pounding of the rice," while kids in Mexico reveal how they create a pinata and use it during their holiday parties. Each segment is highlighted with an enchanting song, and other Sesame Street regulars, such as Rosita, keep viewers involved by making appearances throughout the video. Though Elmo lovers will no doubt be riveted to the screen, others may find it less engaging than other Sesame Street videos (such as Elmo Saves Christmas), since there is much more talking than singing, and because the Sesame Street characters are featured less prominently than the children around the world. However, if you're looking for a video that will broaden your child's horizons while broadening their Elmo video library, this is it...overall it is as fun as it is educational, worthwhile as it is entertaining.
Sesame Street: Christmas Eve on Sesame Street

This Emmy Award-winning musical from 1978 explores an age-old Christmas conundrum: how does a big guy like Santa Claus squeeze down all those narrow chimneys? When Big Bird (Big Bird) and his Sesame Street friends set out to find the answer one Christmas Eve, they explore a variety of amusing theories and learn a lot about the meaning of Christmas in the process. You won't want to miss seeing all your favorite Sesame Street characters as they take to the ice at a nearby skating rink. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of all is the wealth of wonderful music, everything from traditional Christmas songs to the now famous "Keep Christmas with You" by Joe Raposo. Several numbers are signed in American Sign Language and there's even a brief mention of Hanukkah. This 60-minute, classic Sesame Street special, which teaches kids from 2 to 10 to value giving more than receiving and stresses the importance of love and togetherness, is also thoroughly entertaining.
Sesame Street: Computer Caper
get this episode on: DVD click here / VHS click here
Directed by: Jon Stone, Randall Balsmeyer This lively 50-minute program uses live action, animation, and music to introduce computers to the preschool set. The caper begins when Telly gets an e-mail account and Luis helps him send a message to friends. Several characters, including Sesame Street favorites like Cookie Monster (Cookie Monster) and Oscar (Oscar the Grouch), write back, and someone who signs their message, "Your Mystery Friend." Telly has no idea who this could be, so he joins up with Baby Bear and they follow the clues until the mystery is solved. The only segment that doesn't fit the theme is the song "I'm Fixing My Hair," which features children combing and brushing their hair. Computer Caper is an enjoyable look at basic concepts such as the screen, keyboard, mouse and some of the uses to which computers can be applied. It includes a special episode of Elmo's (Elmo) World with Emmy winner Michael Jeter as Mr. Noodle.
Sesame Street: Cookie Monster's Best Bites
get this episode on: DVD click here / VHS click here
Written by: Jon Stone, Randall Balsmeyer America's favorite slave to baked goods, Cookie Monster (Cookie Monster), is the star of this very funny collection of comic sketches culled from the insatiable Muppet's tenure on Sesame Street. From the opening scene, in which the wild-eyed Cookie yields to pure impulse and devours a cookbook (rather than wait for a pastry recipe to be fully realized in his kitchen), the longtime Children's Television Workshop character never fails to entertain with his charming anarchy. Also on the program are classic Sesame Street songs "C Is for Cookie" (and its spinoff, "C Drives Me Crazy," featuring a guest appearance by the Fine Young Cannibals), "If Moon Were a Cookie," and the touching "What Is Friend?" The high point, however, is the gravel-voiced Cookie's scene with actress Annette Bening, who helps him sort out the difference between a "Cookie Here and There." Wonderful stuff for all ages.
Sesame Street: Fiesta!

Directed by: Jon Stone, Randall Balsmeyer Fiesta means party in Spanish, and Sesame Street is pulsating with activity in this upbeat preschool program featuring Latino songs. Jim Henson's Muppets join the fun while everyone's favorite, Elmo (Elmo), learns the Conga- Wiggle dance. Maria, Rosita, and Gabi create floats and costumes; even Oscar (Oscar the Grouch) reluctantly partakes in the festivities. The dialogue is sparse in order to devote most of the 30-minute show to singing and dancing during eight Spanish/English tunes, featuring special performances by Linda Ronstadt and Celia Cruz. Most of the music will be familiar, such as "Conga Counting Song," "Amigo," and "It Sure Is Hot." Kids will also learn greetings, familiar words, and numbers in Spanish. While some might wish for the addition of live-action scenes of Mexico or a more complex story line, the bilingual focus is solid and the ever supportive cast of Sesame Street grownups, kids, and Muppets make it a neighborhood worth visiting.

The irrepressible little red star of Sesame Street sizzles in Elmo's Magic Cookbook, but he's not the only celebrity to wave a wooden spoon here. It all begins when the tummy-rumble-inducing book the tape takes its title from is dusted off from its attic-dwelling days. First, it "alakazams" Jean, the ingredient-providing Julia Child of genies, onto Sesame Street for a primer on churning out a champion batch of ice cream (and one that, in one of a number of characteristically superb running gags, nearly causes Telly to collapse from arm fatigue), and then bam!, everybody's favorite Crescent City culinary whiz comes by to create the perfect pizza with the gang. Chef Emeril Legasse does one better than sprinkle the parmesan and pile on the pepperoni with expected panache, he also peels away the mystery of where cheese comes from. When Legasse leaves on a minestrone emergency, another apron-ready star steps in. This time it's singer Heather Headly, here known as Pocket Queen. Elmo (Elmo), no dummy, is at first resistant to the queen's suggestion that together they cook up some pockets. When she takes him on a video tour of pocket-eating cultures, however (think China's dim sum), he warms to the idea, and what results is a scrumptious-looking summer roll. Each of the video's cooking segments is intercut with food-related bits from the show Grover's hilarious gig as a hopeless waiter is one. In addition to a handful of recipes ripe for kid collaboration, this tape serves up customary Sesame-style excellence. No future foodie's video shelf should be without it.

After his temper subsides, Palmer realizes Jack is just trying to protect him, and agrees to back off and let him do his job. Nina (Sarah Clarke) and a few other agents quickly find the money, in bearer bonds. She hands them to Jack, then wonders how he plans to magically transform himself into Alexis.
Sesame Street: Sesame Street Presents - Follow that Bird

Follow That Bird is as much a journey through time as it is a romp past the Sesame Street stop sign. Curiously, the cast members, live ones like Gordon and Maria, not just the Muppets, have the timeless look to them. Only the cameos (by Sandra Bernhard, John Candy, and others) plus a few ill-conceived hairdos clue us in that this feature film was made in 1985. Otherwise, it's all sophisticated Sesame humor and bighearted fun here as Oscar (Oscar the Grouch), the Count, and crew set off to rescue Big Bird (Big Bird), who's on the lam from a family of adoptive dodos. Only one conceivable complaint: The latter crop of Street viewers may miss Elmo (Elmo), who hadn't been created when Bird first flew into theaters.
Sesame Street: Telling the Truth

Elmo (Elmo) and Telly share billing on this half-hour instructional video that gently preaches the virtue of being forthright. The lesson begins as Gina reads "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to her day-care charges. Elmo dreams himself into the tale, in which no sheep are eaten and the offending wolf ends up tied to a tree. Meanwhile, Telly seems to be the only one who hasn't been or isn't going to the circus. Feeling left out, he tells them his Uncle Tommy (Dennis Quaid) is the ringmaster. Of course, he gets found out, is forgiven, and joins Uncle Tommy, Gina, and the gang in a big song-and-dance number. The irony for adults and older kids is that Uncle Tommy is actually an astronaut, not exactly a low-profile job. But even his uncle gets the call to blast off into space without the benefit of a rocket ship: Telly announces that he loves him even if he's not a circus employee. Stay tuned after the credits for a one-minute message from Quaid. (Ages 2 and older)
